Florida Fishing License — What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we hear from guests booking a charter at Sebastian Inlet is about fishing licenses. Here's the short answer, and some helpful context for anyone planning to fish in Florida.

Do I Need a License for a Zookeeper Charters Trip?

No. When you fish on a licensed charter boat with a licensed captain, your fishing is covered under the captain's charter license. You do not need your own Florida recreational fishing license for a guided charter trip.

This applies to all Zookeeper Charters trips — inshore, nearshore, and offshore. Show up, fish, and go home with your catch. The paperwork is taken care of.

What If I Want to Fish on My Own?

If you plan to fish independently — from the Sebastian Inlet State Park pier, from shore, or from your own boat — you will need a Florida fishing license. Here's a quick breakdown:

Florida Saltwater Fishing License

  • Florida residents (proof of residency required): discounted rates available
  • Non-residents: annual, 7-day, and 3-day licenses available
  • Age exemptions: Florida residents under 16 and 65+ are exempt
  • Military exemptions: active-duty military stationed in Florida may fish without a license

Where to Buy

Florida fishing licenses can be purchased online through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at myfwc.com/license. You can also purchase at most bait and tackle shops, Walmart sporting goods sections, and county tax collector offices.

What Species Require Special Permits?

Some species have specific regulations worth knowing:

  • Tarpon over 24 inches: a Tarpon Tag is required to harvest (catch-and-release is encouraged and does not require a tag)
  • Snook: a separate Snook Stamp is required on your saltwater license to keep Snook
  • Spiny Lobster: requires a recreational license and observes strict season dates and size limits

On all Zookeeper Charters trips, Captain Richard ensures all regulations are followed — size limits, bag limits, and seasonal closures included. You fish, he handles compliance.

Fishing at Sebastian Inlet State Park

The fishing pier and jetties at Sebastian Inlet State Park are open to the public for independent fishing. You will need a valid Florida fishing license (or applicable exemption) to fish there. The park does charge an entry fee per vehicle.

For the best fishing experience at Sebastian Inlet — and to maximize your chances of catching fish — a guided charter with local knowledge of tides, timing, and technique will always outperform fishing independently from the bank or pier.
